The Jewel of the Central Coast

San Luis Obispo was one of the first places I'd ever explored on my own. At 18, during the spring break of my freshman year in college, my friend Brandon and I loaded up my '63 VW Bus and drove the 600 miles from Phoenix to visit a mutual friend of ours who was attending California Polytechnic State University (more commonly known as Cal Poly). Being limited to a top speed of 55 mph gave us a great deal of time to take in and enjoy the surroundings.

I remember being captivated by the green rolling hills, the oak trees, and the fog that rolled in each night and rolled out in the following morning. It offered a striking contrast to the desert that I'd grown up in and known all of my life.

This beautiful landscape, along with climate, proximity to beaches, small-town feel and plethora of outdoor activities have combined to make San Luis Obispo a common travel destination as well as a draw for in- and out-of-state transplants.

My goal with this blog is to offer my firsthand experience as an out-of-towner getting to know the area in the hope that it will serve as a guide for activities in San Luis Obispo and the Central Coast.
